Patient Service Representative

We currently have an open position for a Patient Service Representative. This is an hourly, non-exempt full-time position.

The Center for Family Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) located in Jackson, Michigan. We are a multi-specialty clinic with practitioners specializing in the areas of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Ob/Gyn. Our agency has expanded greatly over the years and now has our medical, dental, pharmacy and support services as well as four school-based health centers in the Jackson area. Position Summary:

Greet, register, and collect payments from patient at time of check in and finalize office visit at check out.

All Patient Service Representatives are assigned to a Patient Care Team that is committed to "Comprehensive Team-Based Care" to meet the needs of our patients and our community. Each Patient Care Team includes providers, medical assistants, referral specialists, patient care coordinators, patient service reps, financial service reps, appointment specialists, social workers, and dieticians.

The team-based approach is a whole person care approach that engages the patient in their health care and requires all team members to be effective and supportive communicators. A high degree of integration and collaboration is required to meet the varying and changing needs of our patients.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greets patients in warm welcoming professional manner, utilizing excellent customer service skills at all times.
  • Verifies and enters all demographic information into the electronic medical record system.
  • Verifies insurance coverage on available electronic verification systems and enters insurance information into electronic medical record including scanning all insurance cards.
  • Distributes forms to patients with necessary explanation and collects forms from patients insuring proper completion.
  • Accepts and processes all payments (both current and previous balance due) and balances all payments collected daily to ensure all money is accounted for and completes the end of day process to balance the electronic cash drawer.
  • Maintains cash box during each shift to ensure all cash-box money is accounted for.
  • Schedules patient appointments.
  • Follows proper process for STAT tests ordered by provider.
  • Completes daily PSR functions (i.e robust reminder calls, wait list, inbasket, faxes, etc.)
  • Consistently and accurately utilizes department scheduling guidelines.
  • Other activities that assist with coordination of patient care, i.e. verbally review patient instructions, orders, referrals, treatment plan estimate, and prior authorizations as well as necessary follow-up to complete these requests.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Completes department-specific projects, such as patient tracking and follow-up.

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Minimum of High School Diploma
  • Previous medical office experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical insurance rules preferred
  • Experience using an electronic medical record preferred

Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively and independently within their work area, staying on task.
  • Demonstrates understanding and appreciation for diversity for CFH patients and CFH employees.
  • Routine testing/training on various job-related skills and competencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate in a friendly, helpful manner with all patients and co-workers.
  • Excellent computer skills.
